INDIA IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH: A RISING ECONOMIC POWER

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT THROUGH DIGITAL MEDIA IN GLOBAL SOUTH CONTEXT

VIJAY SINGH

Abstract

The advent of digital media has emerged as a transformative force for women's empowerment, particularly in the Global South, where traditional socio-cultural and economic barriers have historically restricted women's agency. This paper explores how digital media facilitates empowerment by providing access to education, financial inclusion, entrepreneurship opportunities, and platforms for social and political participation. It also examines regional variations, focusing on Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America, highlighting both successes and persistent challenges such as the digital divide, online harassment, and socio-cultural restrictions. The study underscores the need for gender-sensitive policies, enhanced digital literacy programs, and improved infrastructure to bridge the gender gap in digital access and utilization. Through a comparative analysis, the paper identifies best practices and actionable strategies for leveraging digital media as a tool for sustainable women’s empowerment in the Global South.
