INDIA IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH: A RISING ECONOMIC POWER
PANDEMIC PRESSURES: THE PROFOUND IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON THE GLOBAL SOUTH
KOMAL BANSAL
Abstract
The COVID-19 Pandemic has profoundly impacted the Global South, exacerbating existing inequalities and exposing critical structural vulnerabilities. This paper strikingly illustrates the socio-economic and healthcare dimensions of the crisis in low- and middle-income countries, underscoring the disproportionate burden these nations are forced to bear. Limited healthcare infrastructure, constrained financial resources, and a high prevalence of informal employment have significantly amplified the challenges of managing the pandemic and mitigating its devastating effects. Economic disruptions, including sharp declines in remittances, trade, and tourism, have escalated poverty and inequality, demonstrating the inadequacy of existing social safety nets. Furthermore, vaccine inequity has impeded recovery in numerous regions, starkly revealing systemic disparities in global health governance. This analysis not only highlights the urgent need for action but also reveals how the pandemic has sparked innovative responses, such as localized solutions, digital transformations, and regional collaborations, which can serve as powerful models for future resilience. The findings of this study make it abundantly clear, addressing structural inequities and creating inclusive global frameworks is imperative to support the Global South effectively during crises.
