INDIA IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH: A RISING ECONOMIC POWER
THE ROLE OF INDIA IN THE NEW GLOBAL ORDER: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES
DR. ASHOK KUMAR, KUSUM GOYAL
Abstract
While holding the G20 presidency in 2023, India is strengthening its voice in the international community. The country’s elevated presence on the world stage is being catalyzed by not only its rapid economic growth, but also its Global South strategy that is the axis of India's foreign policy today. As one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies and a key player in international affairs, India’s G20 presidency presented both challenges and opportunities in shaping the new global order. This research paper aims to analyze the role of India’s G20 presidency in navigating the complexities of the contemporary international landscape. With its G20 presidency, India proposed that the African Union become a permanent member of the G20, and the motion was officially accepted at the G20 summit in September 2023. India made the proposal with the aim of garnering stronger support from Africa, which is part of the Global South, and also to curb the influence of China, which is seeking to strengthen its ties with Africa. The objectives of this article are to analyse the country's opportunities and challenges in the context of India in the G20 summit. The current study is conducted using secondary data from books, government publications, open-source databases and other literature sources.
