OBSERVATIONS ON NAVICULA IN POLLUTED AND UNPOLLUTED WATER OF RIVER GOMATI, LUCKNOW

DENZIL JOHN GODIN, B.S.V.PRAKASH

Abstract

The  river  Gomati at Lucknow between Gaughat and Gomati  barrage  supports  a luxuriant  infestation  of pinnate  and  centric  diatoms. However, pinnate diatoms outnumber centric diatoms both quantatively and qualitatively. Navicula species outnumber all other diatom taxa.

Fourteen Navicula species could be recorded from five different locations in the course of the river as it flows through the state capital, where studies were carried out during the period of one calendar year.  It was observed that Navicula species increased in the post monsoon and winter months, decline in summer and reaches a minimum value in monsoon. Their presence may be used in monitoring studies and requires detailed investigation.
