STARCH-BASED BIOPLASTIC FROM JACKFRUIT SEED AND CORN PLASTICIZED WITH GLYCEROL

ANCHU THOMAS, SUCHITH CHELLAPPAN*, CHINGAKHAM.C

Abstract

Plastics have varied applications and have become an essential part of our daily lives. As a global estimate, around 330 million tonnes of plastics are produced per annum. The improper disposal of plastics adversely affects our environment, resulting in the deaths of millions of animals annually and the reduction in the fertility of the soil. The bioplastics products are manufactured to be biodegradable with similar functionality to that of conventional plastics, which has the potential to reduce the dependence on petrochemicals-based plastics and related environmental problems. The expansion and development of bioplastics and their products would lead to an increase in the sustainability of the environment and a reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases. The bioplastics innovation would be a key to a long-term solution for plastic pollution. The present work focus on the utilization of bioplastic samples from jackfruit seed starch (JSB), corn starch (CSB), and a composite of jack seed and corn starch (COM) with varying amounts of eggshell powder as fillers, respectively. This work studies the biodegradability of produced bioplastics and plasticizers' effects on bioplastic. The need for bioplastics is now more than ever as the rate of plastic production and air pollution has increased at a rapid rate and also plastics cause many health risks because of their toxic nature. Therefore, bioplastics can be best suited as an alternative to improve healthy life and sustain a pollution-free planet.
