THE INTERNATIONAL IMPACT OF ADULTERATION ON SPICES SAFETY, CONSUMER HEALTH, AND TRADE

Abstract

Spices are essential in culinary, medicinal, and cultural practices worldwide; however, their high economic value makes them vulnerable to adulteration. This paper examines the adulteration of spices, distinguishing between intentional practices aimed at economic gain and accidental contamination. Common adulterants, including synthetic dyes and fillers, are used to enhance appearance or volume, posing serious health risks such as lead toxicity. Analyzing the motivations and methods behind these practices underscores the importance of ensuring consumer safety, preserving cultural authenticity, and maintaining trust in global spice markets.

This review also evaluates modern detection methods, including DNA barcoding, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy, which have advanced efforts to identify adulterants effectively. However, their use is limited in some regions due to costs and infrastructure challenges. The paper advocates for strengthened regulations and broader implementation of detection technologies to address this widespread issue, aiming to protect consumers, support fair trade practices, and uphold the cultural significance of spices.
